Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865) was the 16th President of the United States, serving from March 1861 until his assassination in April 1865. Born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky, he grew up in a poor family and largely educated himself. Lincoln became a successful lawyer and entered politics, being elected to the Illinois State Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives.

He gained national prominence during debates in 1858 against Stephen A. Douglas, advocating for the abolition of slavery. Elected president in 1860, he led the nation through the Civil War, preserving the Union and promoting the emancipation of enslaved people through the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863. Lincoln’s leadership and vision helped to redefine the nation’s principles of liberty and equality. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth on April 14, 1865, just days after the Civil War’s end, leaving a lasting legacy as one of America’s greatest presidents.
