John Brown (1800-1859) was an abolitionist and radical anti-slavery activist who led a raid on Harpers Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia), in 1859 in an attempt to spark a slave rebellion. Although the raid failed, it helped to galvanize the abolitionist movement and ultimately contributed to the start of the Civil War.
