Rosa Parks (1913-2005) was a seamstress and civil rights activist who became famous for her act of defiance on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. When ordered to give up her seat to a white person, she refused, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott, which lasted for 381 days and ended with the U.S. Supreme Court ruling that segregation on public buses was unconstitutional.
