George Washington (1732-1799) was the first President of the United States and a commanding general during the American Revolutionary War. He is often called the “Father of His Country” for his leadership in the founding of the United States and his role in establishing the presidency. Here General George Washington’s entering into New York City on November 25, 1783 marked the end of the British occupation of the city and the American Revolutionary War. This day is known as Evacuation Day.
